Chapter Ten

Honor

“There’s a boat here?” I ask Rafferty, looking around, my hands on my hips.

I’m out of breath from the run, and hot and sticky. The ocean looks tempting right now, and a part of me wants to just dive right in.

“Yep, a dinghy, over there.” He points to the reeds farther along the bay, and I squint. As I look, I see it. A small, black rubber craft hidden in the long grasses and weeds.

“Oh, okay.” My legs are sore, and I’m tired out now the adrenaline has crashed.

“You look like you need the boat option,” Wilder says. “Adrenaline crash, gets you every time.”

It’s like he read my mind.

“It’s normal,” he carries on. “You’ve been running. And then you find the prize, so you know the games are off for today. I bet you’ll be asleep within an hour of getting home.”

I nod, and as if my body is following his words, I yawn.

“Come on, let’s get you back,” Brody says. “Well done.”

I flush with fresh heat as I remember what I did to him. “Are your…erm…you know…are you okay?”

He laughs. “Are you asking me if I need surgery to re-attach my balls? No, I don’t, but damn, it hurt.”

“Sorry.” I really am sorry I hurt him, too. I don’t like to hurt anyone, but I had to get away.

I had realized when I glanced at the map about two minutes before Brody collided into me that I was close to the end of this hunt, and the rendezvous point where the prize was hidden. The moment he took me down, I was determined to fight with all I had. No way could I be so close to winning but not make it.

The map for today’s game showed me clearly where the prize would be, and it was there, buried under a few inches of sand. The red paper became visible as I scrabbled at the sand beneath the large Mexican bush sage plant, which was marked on the map as the place to look.

As the men drag the boat from the dunes out onto the water, I stroke the shiny paper. I love getting presents. Always have. I didn’t get many growing up, mostly because before him, money was tight, and after him, things went to shit.

“Don’t open it yet,” Asher states. “That’s for opening this evening, while you relax. That’s an order, okay?”

I nod at him. “Yes, of course.”

Once they have the dinghy on the water, Rafferty takes my hand and helps me in. It’s a bit of a squeeze, and I find myself squished next to Brody, which isn’t ideal, given that, not that long ago, I kicked him between the legs.

I remember him calling me something as he took me down. “What did you call me?” I ask him. “Pan?”

He arches an eyebrow. “Short for Pandora.”

“Pandora? Why Pandora?”

“Because I think you might be our downfall.”

“Oh.”

I have no idea how to respond to that.

The conversation is polite, almost pleasantly bland, as if we’re on a day
